Default Preferencial living?
Old 02-08-2010, 08:04 PM   #1 (permalink)

Ok so diesel was raised at my parent's house (they live on an acre and he is often without a collar or leash) he's going to be 6 in october. I bought a condo a few years ago and he's never liked it here. I've managed to get him to spend a couple of nights here and there but definitely not more than 3 total since I've lived here. I do admit that my attempts have been sporadic because he can really get aggrivating. Typically when he comes to my condo he takes like 15 minutes to sniff everything then he's huffing and puffing at the door ready to go "Home" to my parent's house. This is odd because he LOVES to sniff EVERYTHING in EXTREEME detail (he even sniffs the ac vents in the car on the way over) He is my dog, and my parent's and I both want him to come live with me in my condo. He is the only unwilling participant. Do you think taking him for a short walk in the AM before work and a long walk when I get home in the afternoon will help? Do you think a new puppy/buddy will help? How long before he quits going to the door after 15 minutes?

Just a little background here, 75% of the time he won't eat until all 3 of us are at my parent's house (if one is gone for a long time he gets over himself and eats, or maybe he's just too hungry to control it?)

We all really want him to stay at my condo with me but I don't know what to do to make things any easier for him?

I had the same issue when I brought Lump over to my apartment from my parents house, she just turned 5 and they have another dog and big yard where she was able to play all the time. I went out and bought her a couple of new toys amd basically gave her a corner of my living room which she can make as big of a mess as she wants! I make sure to take her out multiple times a day and give her a lot of praise and attention when she wants it. She has been with me since Christmas and has adjusted amazingly well, we go back to my parents house to visit every week or two and now she has started getting fussy over there because she's ready to come back to the apartment!

OMG! There is hope for diesel!! I was thinking of going and getting a 2nd crate and some new toys and setting up a cozy little "pad" for him at my apartment and then try to bring him over on my weekends (thrusday and Friday) and see how he does.

I did the all or nothing approach when I brought her over, this was going to be her new home if she liked it or not, if she pitched fit I didn't allow her the pleasure of my reacting to it. As for the crate, I would bring over his because it smells like him and it would be a good security blanket basically.

We are going out of town at the end of the month for a couple of weeks and he's going to be staying at my parent's with an in house dog sitter. Would you try to move him to the apartment before or after?
