Default Oliver won't stop barking!!!
Old 02-27-2010, 06:31 PM   #1 (permalink)

Oliver is 5 months old and doesn't stop barking!!! He just starts randomly, nothing causes it and there's no stopping it. He stares at the ceiling or off into the distance and just barks and barks and barks. We've tried the whole 'shh' thing that Cesar Milan does. We've tried saying "quiet" with a poke to the neck. We've tried just kicking him off the couch, he just keeps going and going. He started this about 3 weeks ago and nothing is helping. Oh, we've even done "time outs" in the kitchen behind a baby gate and all he does is pee on the floor and stare at us!

Can someone lend any tips or advice??? Thanks!

I never really had issues with chloe, she is very quiet and I didn't even know she could bark until she was about 6 months old. My parents have a pompoo named Taz and he is was king of barking. I find with him distraction works the best, still say your command "no" or "quiet" then when his stops distract him with a toy, eventually he'll learn its much more fun to play then bark. The issues with taz had a lot to do with her was bored, so long walks helped to. Hope that helps

When Uma got too crazy with barking, which didn't happen often, we clapped our hands together loudly and said 'NO BARK!'. It snapped her out of it and she eventually calmed down.

Tank hardly barks and didn't start barking till he was maybe 5 months old. He only barks at the other dog to try to get him to play and he is pretty insistent with that, distractions and the 'quiet' command work for him. He annoys my old lazy senior dog, so I always give him toys or a chew to play with instead cause if his mouth is full he can't bark.

My neighbors use the rattle can distraction for their 3 big dogs, works well for them.

Good Luck!

I agree with the rattle can it usually works well. I'm lucky Howie only barks when he's trying to get another dog to play and even then it's a pretty muffled bark and not too often.

Murphy started backing about a month ago. Some days he is quiet and others he is not...the hand clapping does work. Good luck.
