Default water woes
Old 03-01-2010, 07:32 PM   #1 (permalink)

Any other bostons have issues with rain, baths or just water in general? Chloe absolutely loaths bathtime and it isn't as if I just chuck her in there recklessly. I want bathtime to be nice and not stressful for her or me, I've tried putting her in the bath with no water and giving her treats to make her like the bath and she eats so she doesn't shut down in fear. When i do give her a bath I always run the water first and then put her in, but she clings to me like a cat. Even the rain she doesn't like, any suggestions?

My boy doesn't like the rain but likes a warm bath. We've got to do hydro therapy soon and he'll have to swim so we'll see if he still likes water after that.

Hydro therapy? boy we don't have any of that down here in rural SC. I guess like people, some like the water, some don't. Boy never really liked getting into the tub but when I got started scrubbing it felt oh so good to him and he just relaxed. Haven't put the new babies in the bath yet.

Opie HATES water. He also clings to me during bath time, won't go out in the rain and if there is a puddle, he will walk around it.

We have a pool and this summer we are putting him in it so that he knows how to get out in case he ever falls in. Last summer I held him over it and he started paddling his feet so at least he knows how to swim.

I've started putting her in the tub withour water in there and feeding her peanut butter, Im going to try it once or twice a day to see if she warms up to the tub lol. I don't know if she can swim, when ever I hold her over the tub she curls her feet up close to her and freezes, she's so tense I'm pretty sure she'd sink like a stone.

My Carl doesnt mind the bath tub but he doesn't like it either. I do have a friend with a Boston that HATES baths so she uses a sink that is high up so basically her little guy freezes and stays still for her to wash him. Do have anything high up for your pup. I use this technique for Carl when I need to cut his nails. I put him on the counter top so he doesn't squirm away from me.

Tank took it upon himself to investigate the bath tub, one day I was in the bathroom and he just jumped right into the tub, it was empty. I turned on the water just a little bit for him and he will drink from the tap. He does not like to be sprayed though, so I fill it with a couple inches of warm water and put him in it and he enjoys that.
He does not like the rain, but has gotten a little better with it. He doesn't like running in the sprinklers, but will chase the water from the hose and drink from the bubblers.
I'm going to get a kiddie pool when it warms up and see if he likes it, I'm thinking he will since it gets really hot in Vegas.

I think you are doing the right things to get her use to the tub, maybe get in it yourself and bring some of her favorite toys for a little play time.

Yeah, Coltrane wasn't too big on water when we were at Lake Michigan... I think the waves scared him. That changed when we went on vacation in Alabama... There was a very shallow stream and the water hardly moved and he decided to jump in. We also went to a calm lake and he went swimming. Now he is always looking for a way to jump in the tub, and waits by the door if he hears water running. ... so maybe a calm water, where your dog can choose to go in? idk.
I did videotape Coltrane in the tub though, because it cracks me up.

Well personally Coltrain, I've never seen Lake Michigan when it wasn't freezing cold. So waves or not I side with the dog, The nice warm water a few hundred miles south in Bammy, thats a different story. Trust the dog.

Lake Michigan is pretty refreshing in the middle of July. I wouldn't expect him to go in any other time of year.
