Default Charging the cat
Old 03-06-2010, 05:27 PM   #1 (permalink)

OK.. my sweet little Tugg charges the cat every time he sees her. She has basically been in the bedroom for a week and only comes out occasionally.. If I am sitting and Tugg is sitting with me, he is usually calm. but if I am doing something else he charges toward her and she jumps back over the baby gate into the bedroom. How can I make him stop charging at her?? My nerves are shot.

I have had a trainer come to my home for training for this and a couple other things. She recommended saying nothing to the dog when they do this and put the dog in his crate for a couple of minutes. I tried that for several days and it didn't sink in at all. Another person said use a squit bottle of water for this behavior and I have only had to squit him once and he has calmed down greatly when it comes to the cats. I leae it out and will pick it up and he stops what he is doing. But with any method the most important thing is to make sure the dog is exercised and tired. I truely notice he leaves them alone the most on the days he goes to daycare or has a nice long walk or fetch game. This is a battle for a long time I feel though.

ohhh Scrappy that is NOT the answer I wanted to hear!! I am gonna keep trying and working with them but I'm telling you I am worn out and my nerves are totally on edge. He is an amazing dog and that is the one thing he doesn't listen to me right away on. Ugh.

A few questions: Is the cat declawed? How old is she? Typically, a cat will hold her ground and show who's the boss, but it sounds like yours is fearful. If she cannot or will not stand up for herself, I'd use the squirt bottle. I don't like using the crate for time outs because they should never associate their crates with punishment.

Our cat is 21 and declawed, but she rules over the dogs.

Squirt bottles are great. Rosco is too afraid of them for me to use it. He acts like he's being shot

Tanja Rae (cat) is a 5 year old tortoiseshell and she does have her claws.. One problem is that she is soooooo flipping mean. I think she instigates a lot of the chasing. She's a big cat but fast. and I truly can't describe to you how mean she can be. She bites and scratches me on occasion
