Default Trogg got skunked!! Peeee--Yeew!
Old 01-31-2010, 12:24 PM   #1 (permalink)

I was trying to sleep in on a Saturday morning. I could hear our kids rustling around and letting our two dogs out. Immediately Aspen, our Border-collie/pit-bull mix went into 'alarm mode'. I could tell by her bark that there was real trouble. Both dogs come bolting in through the dog-door squinting and rubbing their faces with their paws. My whole house immediately stunk like a skunk!

I heard tomato juice...I feel bad for you what an awful smell that is!!! My friends dog got skunked, she washed the dog in tomato juice a few times..but you could still smell the skunk. The dog even hated it.

This is what I did. I'd heard about tomato juice, but I didn't have any. So we sprayed vinegar directly on the area. Then hydrogen peroxide with dish soap. Followed up with my 12 year old son's "Axe" body wash. It seemed to work! By the time my nose had recuperated enough to actually see if he still stunk, Trogg was finally dried off. I neglected the area right between his eyes. The animal control officer who came over to rescue us from this cute but nuisance animal suggested liquid laundry soap. It is amazing how much space is between a BT's eyes! Most other dogs would have ended up with soap in their eyes. Anyway, dish soap or laundry soap works pretty well, but you can still smell it. My neighbor told me today that he used a product called "Skunk Off" that he found at the plant nursery for his husky. It has an enzyme in it that digests the odor causing oil completely removing all traces of the odor. The nursery is closed this time of year, and most of the smell is gone enough that we can live with it. I'm really glad we never let the dogs on the furniture now.

...Also, thanks so much for the advice and sympathy! If you have ever wondered why rabies shots are important it is because dogs love to defend there families from things like skunks, and bats, etc.

You should read Winterdance. It is SOOOO funny!! About a childrens book author that decided to run the Iditarod. There is a GREAT chapter on getting skunked. I've read the book 5 times and every time that chapter makes me laugh to tears.

Ok, here it is, 3 weeks since Trogg was sprayed. You could still smell him! I bought a product called "Nature's Miracle". All the smell gone in less then 10 minutes. Just rub it in and let it dry. He actually seems happier now. I thought dogs liked to stink, why else would they roll in cow pies?

Scope mouthwash. My mom had a bottle on the tub at all times because we had a stupid poodle who would get skunked almost nightly in the summer. Works great!
