In 1995 we adopted from Bishop Animal Shelter. She was tattooed inside her thigh and her ear with BAS 945. That was understandable and before chipping was so widespread. I can't make out the logo on your guy.

it is some sort of symbol but I have not been able to identify it. I looked online for symbold from different civilizations and haven't seen anything similar. I figure it was some stupid thing the breeder did. Either that or some strange gang! He is only 2 so microchipping would have been available and more logical. It seems much kinder as well. The rescue said they chipped him, although my vet couldn't find it so it might have fallen out. Either way, they wouldn't have chipped and marked him so it wouldn't have been them. Besides, he is a boy and neutering is certainly obvious. I think that leaves the breeder as the only possibility. I was actually hoping someone might have seen it on another dog and know the breeder.

Did you ask the rescue?

You know, that sounds sort of obvious but I did not. Since then I sent an email to the rescue, which was forwarded to the foster in TX. She said the dog was found as a stray and the rescue down there tattooed him to show he had gone through their rescue and he was fixed. Again, seems strange to me since the scar and empty sacs prove he was fixed and who cares what rescue he went through, but there you have it! I hope it didn't hurt too bad!
Thanks for the rather obvious suggestion that solved my problem/question! Boy do I feel silly!
