Post We are thinking of getting a Boston Terrier any advice?
Old 03-11-2010, 08:05 AM   #1 (permalink)

We have decided we want a dog and we are now having the "what type?" conversation. I fell in love with Boston Terriers when we were living in Florida. We moved to the UK last year, and are now living in a small ground floor apartment. We have a two year old son, who is always outside. We live in a small town with lots of dog friendly places and we walk EVERYWHERE. I am now a stay-at-home mom so thought it would be a great time to get a dog. Can someone please help me with an angle to sway my husband that a Boston Terrier is the dog for us???

BTs are great with kids and are very good companions. They're smart, cute, fun, and pretty easy to train. You can't go wrong with a boston.

What I love about Bostons is that they are a big dog in a small dog package. They have a sunny disposition. Most of them never meet a stranger. They are wonderful children's companions since they love to play simple games. My Boston was not raised with kids but she adores them. When she is around my brother's 5 yr old granddaughter she is her companion and I can't pry her away from her.
I also love their attitude for training puposes. I do a lot of dog sports and Raini has been the easiest dog to train. In 2009 she earned 6 AKC performance titles and that's not counting CPE agility titles.
I don't think you'll find a better pet and companion then the Boston.

We went through this discussion about 5 years ago...I wanted a BT, and my husband wanted a Boxer. We decided that Boxers were a little too big to have indoors around a 2 year old so we went with the Boston and never regretted it one bit. He's super smart, easily trained, GREAT with kids and adores my husband. He watches the front door when it's time for him to come in every evening so they can play fetch. And best of all they're not big barkers..not yappy at all which was a definite plus. Grooming is simple too..they're just everything positive wrapped up in one little package...by far the best breed in my opinion. I can't wait to get another one some day. Haven't found one on the rescue list that would be a good fit for us, but we're keeping our eyes open.

Hi

I'm also in the UK what area are you in?

Boston's are indeed wonderful beautiful dogs but I do think it is important to have all the facts something I wish I had had before getting Badger.

This is not just about my own I also know around 25 - 30 other Bostons and many people have had similar problems.

Badger is an incredibly neurotic dog she has quite a few issues which often means she has a bad tummy and is sick.

She is prone to shake and freak out over the smallest thing

We had to try her on 10 different foods before she would eat / not throw up.

A lot of Boston's are very car sick

Until you get the food right the gas can been pretty bad (this is also because they take in air)

After one incident of a friends child running after Badger shrieking she is terrified of children and it is only now I have managed to stop her growling at them.

Many have separation anxiety after a difficult / freak out incident.

They can be very sensitive dogs I know that Badger is happiest when she's here and things are quite.

All my life I have grown up with dogs of most breeds we currently have a Patterdale who is the best most stable well adjusted dog

As when I started my post I love Badger sometimes too much but we have had many trips to the vets in her short life so far.

Make sure you go to a reputable breeder in the UK. There was one recently in Kent who's Boston's were in such a state it had to have both it's eyes removed.

Depending on what area you are in you could come to a meet up and see some Boston's first hand

I'm part of a Boston group in London and the above issues come up again and again

Definitely buy from a great breeder!! It may be very $$ but worth it in the end. Even then, you can get a sensitive dog--Truman is easily stressed out, but still very lovely and friendly. He just breaks out in redness when he's stressed (or it's allergies, can't figure it out). My second BT is Peggy Sue and she's PERFECT!! She's Truman's mom and healthy and very comfortable with everyone. Both the same breeder, both completely different.

Do your research and find a good breeder. If possible, meet owners of the pups from that breeder to see how many have allergy issues.

Just do it! We got ours and the only thing we regret is not getting him sooner.
