This has happened to my boston a few times, and the vet has always said to really keep an eye on it. The problem is that if the nail is cracked and bacteria gets into it, the nail can heal up, but it creates an absess inside the nail, which can cause a big infection. If it starts to get red, or bleeds for to long I would definitely have the vet take a look at it.
Is the whole nail losing problem possible a vitamin deficiency? My Boston tears his nails all the time not to the exterme as Celtic did but he has had 1 removed by our vet. He breaks them under the skin so they bleed but the nail stays on.

I dont think it is a vitamin deficiency i simply think its hard play or running that makes this occur or it could be accidental on the dogs part.

When I took Spanky to be neutered, he came back with a little cast on his foot. They said that somehow his foot had gotten caught and they had had to "de-claw" him. I was devastated over his little injury and he appeared to be quite miserable with his cast. He whimpered and kept trying to remove his cast. (He seemed more devastated about his foot than his neutering.) We finally removed his cast and and saw that it was a main toenail that had been taken. (We were hoping it was a dew claw.) We pitied him and gave him lots of chicken. Well, many months later his toe nail grew back and returned. We were happy to see his toe nail again as I am sure he was too. Spanky is missing toes on his front two paws and that is just the way he was born. The vet said that he was still a good pet quality dog, but I really didn't want him losing any toe nails . . .I am happy his toe nail grew back. . .
Darth had his one toe nail removed by the vet and she did not think it was a vitamin problem either. The toenail he had remove has grown back but this is his 5th toe he has messed up and normally it gets better with a few soakings of Epsom salts which he seems to love. But I was just wondering about it since he is darn hyper and those tree rats in the backyard will not stop torturing him.
