Default Celtic lost a toe nail!!
Old 07-01-2009, 11:22 PM   #1 (permalink)

So like last wekk or so Celtic's toe bled a bit.
Like from where the nail and pad meet, and it bled a bit every once in a while. He'd limp occasionaly from it. Well today in the car he was bleeding lots and then I looked and his nail was laying on the car seat!!
It doesn't bug him that much he just licks it when it bleeds.

Have you had a vet look at it? Dont let him lick it, that can cause infection, if its not already. Open sores can become infected easily especially since he's been walking on it. Is the quick still there? If you havent already, please take him to see your vet.

Rosie (Sally's mom) lost a nail and the same thing happened, the vet looked at it and said she would be fine. However her nail has never grown back till this day!

Like half of the quick is there.
It's not bleeding anymore at all so he doesn't lick it.
We put cream on it.
He doesn't limp at all on it.
If it seems to bug him I will take him to the vet.

Something will have to be done with the quick. If its just hanging there unprotected chances are he will continue tearing it and causing it to bleed, which is also painful for him.

Once upon a time Rusty appeared to have lost a dew claw but there was a little nub left that grew back.

In addition to all my problems with Kramer's allergies, the poor boy got back from our vet a week ago to have another one of his front claws (outside nail) cut off. He's always damaging them and I keep them trimmed and filed every week.

This is his third nail episode now where the vet cut the nail off at the base because of infections. His nail has always grown back full. This time, his toe is so infected that despite them taking the nail off and a ton of antibiotics, he may have to have it amputated!

Vet is concerned because the xray showed a bulging of the bone on the inside of his tow just above the nail. Says it could be a bone infection or worse, a tumor. They told me this is a common thing they see with Boston's and if they have to amputate the toe, it shouldn't affect him. GOD, I don't want to do that to him!

Kramer's past episodes,,,I've controlled his licking by lightly wrapping the paw with the stuff they use at the vet and I've never had problems with him tearing it off. At least I avoided the cone over his head.

After my last couple of posts with my dog, it may seem like he's not taken care of, but I watch over him like a hawk and always maintain his diet/exercise and hygiene. I never let him run on concrete any more since his first nail he damaged.

Seems this breed is prone to so many problems.....

Regards,

Damon
