Default acana puppy food = stinky farts??
Old 01-17-2010, 07:40 PM   #1 (permalink)

we all know bostons are known to have deadly farts but i'm in the middle of changing rileys food over to acana puppy for small breeds and his farts are smelling worse and coming A LOT more frequently (handful of toots an hour).

Has anyone had this with Acana puppy food? should i just feed him the grain-free? should i just go cold turkey? he's 4.5 months and 8 pounds (wont get bigger than 12 pounds) and was previously on what the breeder was feeding him Purina pro plan puppy small breed.

help i'm running out of fresh air!!

LOL! we feed acana grain free to our two dogs and the farts are soooo much better than they were on eukanuba. every dog is different, you just have to find what works best for him. i would also consider just going ahead and making the switch. when we went from eukanuba to acana we did it in 3 days, had a grand total of 5 days of stink and loose stool and then they were better than usual. you can also try a little bit of yogurt or pumpkin mixed in to help with the transition (pure, all natural, low fat, etc). about a teaspoon. or, our vet has packets of fortiflora which are amaaaazing - you could check into those too.

I had that problem with Orijen puppy. The Acana grain-free lines have done wonders for Pebbles' gas. The fish and lamb work really well.

I feed a variety....Duck and Sweet Potato and the Pork and Applesauce seem to be his favourite so far. And what really impressed me is my 13 year old terrier X who has refused to eat any type of dry kibble his entire life is actually eating it.

We've switched Oliver from the Orijen puppy to Innova and his farts are practically undetectable. He definately still farts but they don't smell too bad. When he was on the Orijen, he pooped every few hours and farted probably 5-8 times an hour, and they STUNK...BAD!!! Our vet said it's because he was getting too much protein and his system couldn't handle it. But now the Innova seems to be working well.
