Wink naps
Old 02-01-2010, 12:02 PM   #1 (permalink)

Hello. I have had little scrappy going on 3 weeks now and he is 17 weeks old. Things are going pretty well with housebreaking. He has had a few (about 5) accidents mainly in my daughters care (she is 15 and doesn't watch him as close as she could although she does have him tethered to her) she has him from 230 until I get home from work at 430.

My question is though when we are all home on the weekend he doesn't go relax and take a nap unless someone is holding him. During the week he is in the crate from about 730 in the morning until my daughter gets home at 230 3 days a week and 2 days a week my niece stops by about 1pm to take him out and play with him for about 20 mins. Then my daughter gets home at about 345 on those days. He is not in the crate again until bed time aound 10pm. I watch him on webcam so I know he sleeps in the crate so I am confused why on the weekends he woudn't want to lay down and nap on his own. I have brought the crate out to the common area with the door open but he doesn't go in there to sleep. Should I go put him in the crate to nap? My concern is that he be comfortable to rest/nap in the house and not feel like he needs to be held all the time.

Does he have a bed...besides the crate? I find Murphy will nap when we are around if his bed is in the room we are in. If we are in the kitchen and his bed is in the main room, we have to move it to the kitchen for him to settle. We don't move his crate.

I'm guessing because there are people home so he would rather hang out with you guys. I know on the weekends if I'm doing a big cleaning of the house or whatever Uma will follow me around instead of taking naps so by the time night rolls around she's out a lot earlier than she is on week nights.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. If he's tired he'll sleep. He's already use to his crate so it's not like he doesn't like it. However, I would stop holding him that much. If he falls asleep in your arms put in down on a bed or a blanket to sleep. Then hang out in the same room and read or watch TV or whatever so he won't feel the need to get up and follow you around.

i agree with el snorto. if it's just me and the dogs they will sleeeeeeep sleep sleep sleeeeeeeep. LOL. then my husband comes home or wakes up and it's plaaaaaaaaaay play play plaaaaaaaaay! it's a social thing. also, the dogs usually only nap if i'm just hanging out on the couch. if i get up then they get up.

Uh ohh, I'm guilty of letting Bogie and Mr. Snubs nap on my lap. I love it. So peacefull when they nap. Sometimes I have Amos & Andy there too. I even hate to wake them when I go pee. I love to pet them while they are sleeping or massage their ears. Boy used to love taking a nap with me. Boy used to and Bogie now that he is bigger, lay between my legs with the recliner up and head on my thigh, Amos's favorite spot is on my chest. He is so small that I don't mind it at all. So are my kids spoiled or what? It's as it should be in my book. I wouldn't have it anyother way. My boys love me, the girl hates me. Oh well!!

Tank won't really go into his crate on his own to nap, he usually sleeps on a blanket on the couch or in one of the dog beds around when he wants to nap on his own. He's been known to hide in closets to sleep also. Some days he sleeps and some days he doesn't, but they will find a way if they want to nap.
Of course his favorite spot is on my lap or snuggled up with me. I agree with you Russ!

Oliver has the same type of schedule. He's crated from about 7:30am to about 1pm when my mother in law lets him out for a bit. Then back in until about 3:45pm. He has never walked into his crate on his own to nap, and we've had him since he was 8 weeks (he's 18wks now). He has a bed in the living area but he usually just plays with his chew toys on it. He naps randomly on weekends, mainly in the heat register on the floor next to the couch. He likes the warm air I guess. He also sleeps on our laps or even next to us on the couch if there is a comfy blanket. I agree with everyone else, If he's tired, he will sleep. If I have to get anything done and I don't want him up my butt, I'll put him in his crate and he'll fall asleep.

Wesley sleeps when he wants to now but I did spoil him before and it was a bad habit to break. It ruined his meal times and potty walks because he was tired and would sleep till late in the morning. I held him less and also ignored him when he wanted couch time to sleep. He's better now, when he wants to hang on the couch he'll come to me but if he's tired he'll go to his cave(crate).
