Default moving backwards... crate training
Old 02-02-2010, 11:25 AM   #1 (permalink)

Riley is now 5 months and when I first got him at 3 months he was doing extremely well with his crate training with no accidents, sleeping 9/10 hrs at night without a peep. He's 90% mastered his pee pad training only having a few accidents here and there but now he's having accidents in his crate. Even if he's just peed and is put in his crate 30mins later he'll go. And last night he peed in his crate for the first time. He doesnt have UTI or any medical problems and need your help! any suggestions or thoughts???

not really... i figure its too late and he would have no clue what i'm talking about. the last thing i want to do is to punish him and him thinking that's what he'll get everytime he goes into his crate.....

what would you do?

I would withhold water for few hours before bedtime and take him for a little walk before bed. This might help, I hope so.

We too were having the same problem. I try and read everything I can online ot see what other puppy owners suggest and it seems that withholding water close (w/in 2 hours) to bedtime and also taking out to pee right before being crated for the night has seemed to help us. I asked in puppy class the other night and was told that they simply are not capable of holding their bladders for too long- physically. So for us I keep the water bowls in the kitchen and I know when he is going to drink and don't let him drink after say 8-9 pm( we go to sleep about 11) and try not to let him run around and get too thirsty between last drink and bed time. He will now hold his pee until we get up or he will yelp around 6 am to go out.

Have you recently changed crates or made his crate larger?

Hi all,

riley has not had an accident since that one night. he probably didnt empty out his full bladder during his before bed potty. he sometimes likes to potty in installments for extra treats!! thanks all for the suggestions and comments!
