Default Help again with Maxwell!!

Hello Again Everyone!!

So Max has been doing very well with potty training with the use of pee pads in the house (due to the cold weather outside, he will not go out) But I cannot get him to poop on the pads, he just goes somewhere else to poop. Any ideas on how I can get him to do it on the pad? Im doing the same type of training I did while getting him to pee on it, but no luck with the poop. Thanks for any suggestions!

I know how frustrating potty training can be. My boston is 15 weeks and he is still being housebroken, but doing pretty well. He is my 5th dog(2nd house dog) but our eldest dog is much older (10 yrs old)and has absolutely no accidents- we tease him that he has a bladder of steel.Anyway, when we got Bugsy(our Boston) we started by keeping him in a gated in area(our kitchen with tiled floors). We put down puppy pads and constantly(I mean every 30 minutes-1 hr) were directing him to "go potty" and moving him to the designated area. Of course he had accidentts now and again, but the thing was that we were constantly watching him, especially after he ate or drank. In the event that we could not be right there with him, we would put him on his leash and take him into whatever room we were going into . It is really tiring but I am happy to say that we have had him since December 20 and he has only had 3 pooping accidents (he is trained now to go outside only). And all 3 were entirely our faults, we had walked away for that moment and he went near the 3 doors that lead to outside. Last night when I was in puppy class that was the one thing that the instructor made mention of is that they cannot roam the house free will because they will go wherever until they learn not to. So she actually suggested either leashing them and tying/carrying the leash w/ you until they eliminate (you need to direct them to their spot and cue them"go potty" or whatever you say to them).I also work from home so I realize it is much easier to follow this constant schedule of taking him outside(about every hour or so, unless he is sleeping. And always w/in 15 minutes of eating/drinking) Usually after Bugsy goes, I will let him off leash but always keep an eye on him. From my past experience with my other house dog(Border Collie) they really are not fully housetrained until at least 6 months or more. Prior to that age I crate my dogs whenever we had to leave the house and that worked really well for me before and is working well now with Bugsy. He also goes out to potty right before we go to bed and then put into his crate and sleeps in our room (usually about 6 hours before he yelps to go potty). Hope that helps and good luck

Does he go to a constant 'somewhere else' to poop? When I was potty training Tank, I didn't train on pads, but put a few out "just in case" I found that he took to peeing outside faster than pooping, but he would always run down the hallway and poop at the end of it (farthest place he could get from us) so I put a couple pads down there to 'catch it' if we missed seeing him go down there.

When he poops on the floor pick up the poop, take him outside with the poop (or to the pad) put the poop down, and show him where the poop goes, Scold only where he pooped. Be nice when you put it where you want him to go. Still being angry will totally confuse him. You'll have to go through it all again when you switch to out side. Keep treats handy at all times and watch him carefully, when he does his business where he is supposed to, immediatly give him the treat with lots of good boy hugs and praise. Giving him the treat later will not register what the treat was for. Caution: this is only what I find works, no guarantie's, no money back!!! but let me know how this works

if it was me i would buy him a octogon puppy pen and cover the whole floor with the pads you use. right when you know he has to poop put him in their and go hide but spy on him he will go if your not their, but you have to spy on him so you can catch him and then give alot of praise do this a few times and he will catch on its ok to poop on them too

My puppy is 9 weeks old and I've still been taking her outside to go potty anyway, even though it was cold out.. she caught on pretty quickly, she'll be 10 weeks old on Friday, we've only had her for not quite 2 weeks and she is already potty trained.. hasn't had any accidents in 3-4 days. She's my fourth dog, we have two Boston Terriers and two French Bulldogs.. I house trained 3 of my dogs, and one of them we got as an adult that was already house trained. I ~never~ use the potty pads, they just confuse the dog. Right now you're teaching him that it's okay to potty in the house, even though you are teaching him to go on the pad, it's still inside. When it gets warmer you are going to have to start all over again, training with potty pads and then training them to go outside after they've learned to go on the potty pad is pretty difficult and takes twice the work. I don't have any advice for making him poop on the pad, sorry. I'm sure picking up his poop and placing it on the pad will help though, as someone else mentioned.. makes sense to me. I would assume if he smells the poop on the pad he would start associating it with going potty there I would think.. I just wouldn't be too fond of keeping stinky poop in the house until the "figured it out"!
