Hello everyone,
I have thought about posting in the Rescued Bostons forum for a while. Many of you may remember when I adopted Rocky back in April. I had some questions as he is my first Boston and he had a few issues that we had to overcome.
However, I am happy to say that Rocky is doing so well. He can be a little stubborn at times. Especially when we are outside and he is not ready to come in. But that is a 180 degree turn from the way that he was when I first brought him home from the Animal Control Shelter. Then, he was very timid. He was ok around me, but not around anyone else. Not anymore.
Rocky has decided that this is his house but that he will allow us to live here and even set some rules over him. He has adjusted so well.
He still seems to have a fear of a crate and so I don't use it. Maybe there was some abuse with a crate in his past.....I don't know. But, I work out of my home so that usually isn't an issue anyway. However, there are times that I need to leave the house for different things that I can't take him with me. For awhile, that was an issue. I would put him in the bathroom with food and water and even his bed. But he would destroy it. Without fail, he would poop on the floor (that was the reason for choosing the bathroom...Tile is much easier to clean than carpet) , turn over the trash can, knock over shampoo and other things in the bathroom. I remained patient with him and I am happy to say that we have worked through it. The last couple of times that I have had to leave, there have been no problems at all. I always talk to him before I leave and make sure that he is calm.. It used to be that when I came back home and opened the door to let him out, he would cower down and start shaking. I guess he knew what a mess he had made. But about a week ago, when I came home and opened the door, he was fine. He barked and kept looking back at the bathroom like he wanted me to see that he had not made a mess that time...I praised him and gave him a treat. Since then, there have been no other problems.
Rescuing Rocky has proven to be very fulfilling. He has turned into a wonderful pet/friend. Anyone thinking of rescuing one of these wonderful dogs, you may have a rough period for a while. Just remember, you never know what the animal has been through. But by exercising patience and showing love to the animal, you wind up with a wonderful friend..
Only problem I have now is keeping him in toys. Here is an example why........
